2ND INTERNATIONAL HIPPOCRATES CONGRESS ON MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES

Since the beginning of time, humanity has been in search of sustaining their  health and even of finding a cure for death. People struggled for curing their diseases since the ancient times and tried to heal themselves with medicinal plants as they did in Ancient Egypt or Greece. It is to our knowledge that certain surgical interventions were also performed in time, as their experience accumulated.

Hippocrates, who is considered as “The Father of Medicine” argued despite the common belief of those times, that the diseases did not arise as a result of God’s rage or of extraordinary powers but each and every disease had a physical and rational explanation to it. He was the first doctor to define the symptoms of pneumonia and epilepsy in children. He proposed that the thoughts and emotions were not generated in the heart but in the mind. He thought medicine in the School of Medicine he established in Kos.

Europe during the Middle Ages came into a period of stagnation in the field of medicine, just as it did in every field. Islamic world’s level of medicine for that same period, on the other hand, was spectacular. Avicenna performing anatomical research, Farabi working on human physiology and anatomy, Ali Bin Abbas performing the first cancer surgery, El Razi using the animal intestine as surgical stitching material for the first time, Sabuncuoğlu Şerafettin known for his research in experimental physiology are only a couple of examples to this.

Medical research advancing in Europe after the 15th century made a great progress through the last century thanks to the advancements in technology. On one hand, diagnosis and treatment of numerous diseases are now easier. On the other hand, the negative circumstances arising as a result of industrialization led to the generation of new diseases. The first priority for today’s community is now the “Health and Healthy Living”.

Research in medicine is the leading component of Turkey’s scientific development. Conducting their research both locally and internationally with reference to Atatürk’s “Resign me to the Turkish doctors!” statement, Turkish scientists made great achievements. The International Hippocrates Congress on Medical and Health Sciences has been born with the aim of sharing and discussing the scientific research and novel advancements in the field of health in an academic environment. It was aimed for catching up with the speed of progress in knowledge, by gathering local and foreign scientists together. It is no doubt that congresses are one of the channels for information sharing. It is expected that unique studies and research from all fields of Medical and Health Sciences will be presented either orally or through poster sessions during the congress.
